Ophelia pattern
In the Ophelia pattern, the unseen heroine of Shakespeare’s play delicately weaves her fingers through field and forest grasses, evoking a sense of quiet melancholy. The dark color palette, along with the presence of large swamp mosquitoes, enhances the mood of sorrow and stillness.
Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite paintings of John William Waterhouse and the tragic image of Ophelia, my goal was to merge elements of a drowned woman, a murky swamp, mosquitoes, and wildflowers into a cohesive design. The main challenge was integrating the woman’s hands into the pattern in a way that conveyed fluidity and grace, without reducing them to lifeless, disjointed limbs.
